Chapter Seven
A FEW DAYS LATER, after the casting was completed and the actual film production had started, Jillie stood behind the camera and watched Diana seduce Griff. Okay, it wasnât really a seduction, but it might as well be. Whatever it was, the sexual tension on the set was high enough that all of the crew members, including Jillie, were out in a sweat.
In the movie scene, Diana was supposed to convince Griff that he needed to help her find the buried treasure, which included a fabulous jewel that had been the centerpiece of a queenâs necklace. In the scene, Griff was playing the part of an adventurer. The role was so close to his real persona, it wasnât much of a stretch. With all her heart, she hoped the scene wouldnât eventually mirror reality.
When theyâd started this assignment, she was uncomfortable with the idea of making a film that mirrored the real quest they were pursuing. And the more she learned of the plot, the closer it became. Was this by design? Was the film intended to be the vehicle in which the choker would reveal itself? She wondered who had come up with the idea. And was that person searching for the necklace too?
It was easier to consider all the angles than face the reality of what had almost happened with Declan a few nights ago.
When sheâd returned to the motel, Griff had been nowhere to be seen. She admitted to herself that she hadnât tried terribly hard to find her partner. Still confused about her encounter with Declan and the desire heâd awakened, sheâd been too afraid of what she might reveal. Most of all, she was afraid to acknowledge that if sheâd spent a few more minutes with Declan, she might have succumbed to his potent sensuality.
Now, days later, she still hadnât told Griff. Not that it mattered. Ever since he had accepted the lead in the film, he was completely focused on his role . . . and on his co-star.
Jillie focused the lens for a better shot of the scene . . . and Griff. He was sitting at a table in a Mexican cantina, watching Diana as she danced for him. He sent her a smoldering look, one that encouraged Diana to whirl faster, her full Gypsy skirts rising higher and higher to show off her perfect long legs. Unable to look away, Jillie studied them. If Griff was acting, he was giving an award-worthy performance. The scene dripped with raw desire. Diana came close, and he reached an arm to pull her into his lap. When he kissed her, Jillie felt the sensation in her own gut. She could only imagine what Diana was feeling.
âCut,â the director, Billy Lattimore, said. At the order, the production cameras stopped as everyone relaxed.
Not Jillie. She switched her angle to catch the director as he walked over to speak with his actors. At Billyâs matter-of-fact assessment of the performance, the heated atmosphere dropped a few degrees until it was almost possible for her to breathe again.
